The CRUK Manchester Institute is based on the Christie Hospital site fostering the excellent links between basic and clinical scientists. The site is around 8 miles south of the centre of the city of Manchester near the pleasant village of Didsbury. Manchester itself has undergone dramatic developments recently, and it is now one of the most exiting cities in Europe, with facilities to match. Manchester is home to over 2.6 million people, with 7 million more living within the wider region. It is therefore Britain's second largest city after London, and the range of activities and facilities reflect this (see for example http://www.visitmanchester.com/). There has been significant regeneration and investment throughout the city, and there are now fantastic facilities for every activity ranging from sport (playing and watching), music, theatre, arts, museums, eating and drinking. The city is also within easy distance of some of the finest countryside in the UK, including the Lake District, and the Peak District.
In addition Manchester International Airport is only a short distance from the CRUK Manchester Institute, and the area is also served by extensive road and rail links.
