Scientific Colloquium

As an Institute, we believe offsite meetings provide significant benefits for staff. They help to strengthen relationships amongst colleagues, improve institute culture, and enhance focus and creativity.

Each year, we organise our Scientific Colloquium, a three-day meeting held off site where we hear the latest research from our 2nd year PhD students and Group Leaders as well as updates from our core facilities, and poster sessions alongside social events.

We also include in the itinerary plenary talks from invited guests, plus a careers session with select alumni.

3Rs Poster Competition

Humans share around 90% of their genes with all other mammals, because of this animal research has been used to discover how the basic processes of the body work and how these can go wrong when the body is affected by disease.

Most of our research does not involve animals but some animal research is essential if we are to understand, prevent and cure cancer.  We only use animals – mice – when there is no alternative and we adopt the 3Rs principle (reduction, refinement and replacement of animals).

The CRUK Manchester Institute Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB) sponsors an annual 3Rs poster event to celebrate advances in mouse welfare and science across our research groups.

End of Year Parties

In December each year, the Institute holds a party for all staff to celebrate achievements and thank everyone for their hard work during the year.

This is an inclusive event for all, and recently we have had made it more interactive, with games and quizzes for everyone to play.

Institute Life

We strive to make our community a welcoming, caring and enthusiastic one, fuelling ambition with opportunities for training and mentoring to help us all achieve our personal and professional goals.

“We are so pleased to have received the funding to enable us to test our hypothesis in the lab. If we can create a new medicine that can precisely target a specific type of cell within the tumour, and restore anti-cancer immune responses, this will be a game-changer for oesophageal cancer patients “

Sara Valpione

Former Institute Clinical Fellow and now Clinician in Residence within the CRUK National Biomarker Centre

“My charity bake sales – known as “David’s Great British Bake Off” – are always a hit, home baked products taste so much better than shop bought and are greatly appreciated by staff!”

David Jenkins

Purchasing Officer

“The Paterson Building is an amazing place to work, and already it is clear that its design is helping to promote interactions, which was something we all very much hoped would happen”

Caroline Wilkinson

Chief Operating Officer

“We’ve seen some remarkable responses, with an improvement for some patients within days. This is an early phase trial so there’s a lot more work to do. But the data we have so far is very encouraging and could help many thousands of people in the future”
