Providing advice and guidance to managers and staff on all employment-related matters

The Human Resources commitment

The Human Resources team at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute is committed to delivering a high-quality, proactive service to the Institute.

The team provides advice and guidance to managers and staff on all employment-related matters such as recruitment, onboarding, policy guidance, employment legislation and best practice.

Our aim is to ensure that all people within the Institute have a supportive environment that enables them to flourish and achieve their best through workplace initiatives and practices in a place that is conducive to supporting mental health and wellbeing

The team strongly support the Institute’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) vision, which is to create a diverse and inclusive culture that develops, attracts, and maintains a positive environment for staff and students whilst achieving its aim to deliver world class cancer research.

In line with our Institute values, HR have launched a wellbeing strategy, which has included Wellbeing Champions being recruited across the Institute.

Services

Joining the Institute

Our HR team provides a full on-boarding service, ensuring newly hired employees are integrated into our Institute and its culture, including training, tools and documentation. This is an important part of helping employees understand their new position and job requirements.

All research staff will be provided the time equivalent to 10 days a year to undertake training and continuing professional development, in line with the University’s and CRUK’s adoption of the principles of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. Opportunities include, but are not limited to, the training in key skills (including research skills, Research Leadership, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity).

Equality Diversity and Inclusion

As an Institute, we have a vision to create a diverse and inclusive culture which develops, attracts, and maintains a positive environment for staff and students whilst achieving the Institute’s aim to deliver world class cancer research. The HR team approach this vision through five aims, including providing EDI Awareness and Training and ensuring recruitment practices adhere to and promote EDI.

Members of the HR team sit on the EDI Steering Committee, which provides leadership, drive and strategic direction on equality, diversity, and inclusion across all parts of the Institute.

Wellbeing

Our wellbeing is important in every area of our lives, including while we are at work. In line with the Institute’s commitment to fostering a culture of wellbeing at work, HR are here to support all staff with their wellbeing.

Members of the HR team sit on the Wellbeing Focus Group. This group has been established to promote general wellbeing and to orchestrate mental health support for staff and students. The group also brings together elements from Health & Safety, Human Resources, Student Management and Trade Unions and reports to the wider Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee.

Institute life in Manchester

We strive to make our community a welcoming, caring and enthusiastic one, fuelling ambition with opportunities for training and mentoring to help us all achieve our personal and professional goals.

“We are so pleased to have received the funding to enable us to test our hypothesis in the lab. If we can create a new medicine that can precisely target a specific type of cell within the tumour, and restore anti-cancer immune responses, this will be a game-changer for oesophageal cancer patients “
