A note from the Manager – Mike Berne

The robust services of the Finance Team provide the backbone to the smooth running of the Institute. I work closely with the Director and Senior Management Team, and interact on a regular basis with the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Laboratory Officer and Chief HR Officer to ensure involvement in all financial matters and developments. Having previously worked in the finance services at The University of Manchester, I have many contacts and excellent working relations with university finance teams, which facilitates my role.

Meet the Finance Team

I am pleased to introduce my wonderful team, whom I enjoy working alongside. We are a small and close group, with many of us having worked together for several years supporting the Institute.

Fundraising and Suppliers-A-Go-Go star!

Movember Fundraising Champ

We are very proud of Finance Purchase Officer David Jenkins, who has been fundraising for men’s health for over ten years. Each Movember, David pulls out all the stops for the charity. He is motivated to raise funds to tackle some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and poor mental health.

David is well known at the Institute for his superb, fun and inventive fundraising activities. He usually kicks everything off with ‘David’s Great British Bake-Off Halloween Special’ on 31 October, followed by David’s Lucky Dip and his Movember Raffle. Last year he raised a staggering grand total of £1,922!

Number one Supplier Exhibition on Planet Earth!

As Finance Purchase Officer, David has worked with our suppliers for many years and has built up an incredible relationship with them. He ingeniously created the ‘Suppliers-A-Go-Go’ exhibitions to bring together our scientists and laboratory equipment suppliers, where we can meet our suppliers face to face and find out about the latest technologies and product developments,. These events are well loved by our staff and the suppliers alike, with everyone going home happy.

Last year’s Institute Colloquium was sponsored by David’s Suppliers A Go-Go. David invited around 25 of our most popular suppliers to exhibit alongside our own poster session. Their funds went a long way to offset the costs of the colloquium.

Institute life in Manchester

We strive to make our community a welcoming, caring and enthusiastic one, fuelling ambition with opportunities for training and mentoring to help us all achieve our personal and professional goals.

“We are so pleased to have received the funding to enable us to test our hypothesis in the lab. If we can create a new medicine that can precisely target a specific type of cell within the tumour, and restore anti-cancer immune responses, this will be a game-changer for oesophageal cancer patients “

“My charity bake sales – known as “David’s Great British Bake Off” – are always a hit, home baked products taste so much better than shop bought and are greatly appreciated by staff!”

David Jenkins

Purchasing Officer

“We’ve seen some remarkable responses, with an improvement for some patients within days. This is an early phase trial so there’s a lot more work to do. But the data we have so far is very encouraging and could help many thousands of people in the future”

Tim Somervaille

Senior Group Leader

“It is a pleasure to introduce my team who work to deliver our research goals. We work in a friendly and collaborative environment, supporting each other’s projects.  “
