The Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) was formed in 2006 by The University of ManchesterCancer Research UK and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.  It has since been established as the cancer research arm of the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC), which is a strategic partnership between the University and six NHS Trusts across Greater Manchester.

The Manchester Cancer Research Centre brings together basic, translational and clinical researchers to provide a more integrated approach, which is essential to turn findings in the laboratory into better, more effective treatments for cancer patients.  The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute is at the heart of the Manchester Cancer Research Centre.

The MCRC is committed to bringing together teams of dedicated scientists who have committed their lives to researching and beating cancer.  These world-leading individuals or groups leverage their expertise and experience to tackle the global cancer challenge. We believe that by embracing our diverse research interests, our multidisciplinary and complementary range of specialisms, we can collaborate towards a shared goal.

Professor Nic Jones was the inaugural Director of the Centre until August 2017 when the Directorship was taken up by Professor Rob Bristow, one of the world’s leading prostate cancer experts and Senior Group Leader at the Institute leading the Translational Oncogenomics group.

The Paterson Building opening triggers the next phase of cancer research in Manchester. Thanks to the colocation of laboratory and clinical researchers, ideas and innovation will be free-flowing that we hope will enable more research to be translated into the clinic and double the number of patients who can access a clinical trial by 2030.

Institute Life

We strive to make our community a welcoming, caring and enthusiastic one, fuelling ambition with opportunities for training and mentoring to help us all achieve our personal and professional goals.

“We are so pleased to have received the funding to enable us to test our hypothesis in the lab. If we can create a new medicine that can precisely target a specific type of cell within the tumour, and restore anti-cancer immune responses, this will be a game-changer for oesophageal cancer patients “

Sara Valpione

Former Institute Clinical Fellow and now Clinician in Residence within the CRUK National Biomarker Centre

“My charity bake sales – known as “David’s Great British Bake Off” – are always a hit, home baked products taste so much better than shop bought and are greatly appreciated by staff!”

David Jenkins

Purchasing Officer

“The Paterson Building is an amazing place to work, and already it is clear that its design is helping to promote interactions, which was something we all very much hoped would happen”

Caroline Wilkinson

Chief Operating Officer

“We’ve seen some remarkable responses, with an improvement for some patients within days. This is an early phase trial so there’s a lot more work to do. But the data we have so far is very encouraging and could help many thousands of people in the future”
