Health and Safety

Looking after the health and safety of everyone

The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute is committed to pursuing high standards in everything it does and this includes the management of health and safety. Accordingly, we are committed to complying with all its statutory obligations and pursue best practice in the higher education sector. Health and safety is recognised as a core management function and we regard it as integral to all other activities.

As an Institute, we promote a positive health and safety culture and provide various different types of health and safety training relevant to the work of our staff and students.

The Health and Safety team supports and facilitates the Institute in achieving these goals. They are responsible for the design, development, implementation and monitoring of health and safety policies within the Institute to ensure compliance with relevant legislation. In this capacity, the manager sits on Institute and University Health and Safety Committees.  They also undertake the planning, delivery, maintenance and audit of a risk management strategy to ensure compliance with various regulations, University and Institute policies.

The Manchester Institute consistently performs well in university led audits of our work.

Services

Health and safety advice

As health and safety is implicated in all aspects of work, our own workflow is varied and busy. One of the most visible tasks we undertake is providing advice to staff – we provide advice to Institute members at all levels of the organisation on all aspects of health and safety to promote a safe working environment, a positive safety culture and ensure that we comply with current safety legislation and university and Institute policies. This includes advice on risk assessment of work and the production of risk assessments.

Safety Inspections

We undertake comprehensive safety inspections of work areas to identify issues of non-compliance or unsafe work practices. We then implement and oversee remedial actions to secure a safe working environment. Much of our work is reported to, and scrutinised by, the Institute Health, Safety and Wellbeing Committee.

A note from the Manager – Colin Gleeson

“My role is varied. Some aspects such as developing policies and guidance on a particular issue is predictable and can be planned, but other aspects such as responding to an accident and investigating it, is unpredictable and can happen at any time. As such, priorities are constantly changing but being able to adapt in this way is an enjoyable aspect of my work.

An important aspect of my work is interacting with people. I enjoy helping them to achieve their goal by using my knowledge and experience to troubleshoot issues and provide potential solutions.”

Institute life in Manchester

We strive to make our community a welcoming, caring and enthusiastic one, fuelling ambition with opportunities for training and mentoring to help us all achieve our personal and professional goals.

“We are so pleased to have received the funding to enable us to test our hypothesis in the lab. If we can create a new medicine that can precisely target a specific type of cell within the tumour, and restore anti-cancer immune responses, this will be a game-changer for oesophageal cancer patients “

“We’ve seen some remarkable responses, with an improvement for some patients within days. This is an early phase trial so there’s a lot more work to do. But the data we have so far is very encouraging and could help many thousands of people in the future”

“It is a pleasure to introduce my team who work to deliver our research goals. We work in a friendly and collaborative environment, supporting each other’s projects.  “
