Colin Gleeson
Health & Safety Manager and Biological Safety Advisor
As Health & Safety Manager, Colin advises the Institute Director and Chief Operating Officer on the interpretation of health and safety policies within a legislative framework. He also has expertise in biological safety and oversees the Institute’s Biosafety Committee.
About Colin Gleeson
After gaining a postgraduate certificate in Microbial Biotechnology and a MSc in Fungal Technology, Colin worked in infectious diseases research at Imperial College, London. During this time, he began assuming responsibilities for safety and lab management tasks and this role grew. He gained a NEBOSH diploma in Occupational Safety and Health whilst at Imperial. Colin became the Safety and Resource Manager for the Centre for Molecular Microbiology and Infection and then moved to CRUK MI in 2004. He has since gained Biosafety Professional Level 2 status whilst working at the Institute. At CRUK MI, he manages the health and safety management system and contributes to the operational management of the Institute.
Colin’s responsibilities at the Institute include:
To advise the Institute Director and Chief Operating Officer of the interpretation of health and safety policies within a legislative framework.
To design, develop, implement and monitor health and safety policies for the Institute.
To be responsible for the overall management and performance of Health and Safety within CRUK MI.
To promote and manage a safe working environment for staff, students and visitors to the CRUK MI.
To ensure that the Institute, in its day-to-day operations, complies with health and safety and environmental laws to minimise the likelihood of harm to its staff, students, visitors, buildings and equipment and so avoid financial penalties (e.g. fines).
To devise, implement and monitor health and safety management systems, ensuring they are responsive to changes in health and safety and environmental legislation and/or governance requirements of the University of Manchester.
To provide appropriate health and safety induction training for Institute staff and students.
To oversee the Institute’s Biosafety Committee.

The Health and Safety team is comprised of myself and Chris Bamber. Together, we provide health and safety advice at all levels of the organisation. We have also developed a large body of health and safety information, which is made available to all staff via our intranet. This includes the CRUK MI Health and Safety Manual, Codes of Practice, guidance notes and numerous forms to enable staff to comply with legal and University governance requirements.
