Scientific Administration

Supporting the Institute

The Scientific Administration team provides a variety of services to aid the smooth running of the Institute. Team members cover grants administration, research integrity, postgraduate education, health and safety, communications, and information governance.

The Grants Advisor and Scientific Operations Officer assists our scientists in sourcing external funding opportunities and in preparing applications. She also provides support to the Grants Committee, who peer review applications and help applicants prepare for grant/fellowship interviews.

The Postgraduate Education Manager oversees our Postgraduate Education Programme and provides pastoral support.

The Research Integrity and Training Adviser supports the Institute’s scientific community through a manuscript review process and training sessions for our early career researchers, covering topics such as statistical analysis, meta data recording as well as a research integrity induction for new students and staff.

The Institute’s Information Governance Coordinator and Administrative Officer supports the Institute’s Information Governance Guardian, Caroline Wilkinson, with the management of information security, data protection and record management to ensure information governance disciplines are embedded within working practice across the Institute.

The Health and Safety team are responsible for the design, development, implementation and monitoring of health and safety policies within the Institute to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and facilitate and positive health and safety culture.

Members of the Scientific Administration team also sit on the editorial team for the Institute’s Newsletters, manage our social media content, produce the annual scientific reports and oversee press releases featuring the Institute’s research.

The Animal Welfare and Ethical Research Body Chair and the Regulatory Liaison & Training Officer also sit within the Scientific Administration team.

Institute Life

We strive to make our community a welcoming, caring and enthusiastic one, fuelling ambition with opportunities for training and mentoring to help us all achieve our personal and professional goals.

“We are so pleased to have received the funding to enable us to test our hypothesis in the lab. If we can create a new medicine that can precisely target a specific type of cell within the tumour, and restore anti-cancer immune responses, this will be a game-changer for oesophageal cancer patients “

Sara Valpione

Former Institute Clinical Fellow and now Clinician in Residence within the CRUK National Biomarker Centre

“My charity bake sales – known as “David’s Great British Bake Off” – are always a hit, home baked products taste so much better than shop bought and are greatly appreciated by staff!”

David Jenkins

Purchasing Officer

“The Paterson Building is an amazing place to work, and already it is clear that its design is helping to promote interactions, which was something we all very much hoped would happen”

Caroline Wilkinson

Chief Operating Officer

“We’ve seen some remarkable responses, with an improvement for some patients within days. This is an early phase trial so there’s a lot more work to do. But the data we have so far is very encouraging and could help many thousands of people in the future”
