Operations
The Backbone of the Institute
Our dedicated Operations teams help facilitate the smooth running of institutional activities, enabling the research.
Team members cover human resources, finance, health and safety, grants administration, research integrity, postgraduate education, communications, information governance, business continuity planning/risk management and governance of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act. They ensure regulatory and legislative compliance in several key areas.

Scientific Administration
Caroline Wilkinson, Chief Operating Officer
The Scientific Administration team provides a variety of services to aid the smooth running of the Institute. Team members cover grants administration, research integrity, postgraduate education, communications, information governance, risk management and the governance of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act.

Human Resources
Rachel Powell, Chief Human Resources Officer
The Human Resources team at the Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute is committed to delivering a high-quality, proactive service to the Institute.
The team provides advice and guidance to managers and staff on all employment-related matters such as recruitment, onboarding, policy guidance, employment legislation and best practice.

Finance
Mike Berne, Chief Finance Officer
The CRUK Manchester Institute Finance team support the Senior Management Team with the financial management of the Institute. They provide a fully comprehensive purchasing, travel and finance service to all staff on a daily basis.

Education
Julie Edwards, Postgraduate Education Manager
The CRUK Manchester Institute has an active postgraduate programme that provides first class students and clinical research fellows the opportunity to study for cancer-related PhD degrees. The training programme aims to improve effectiveness in research, provide professional and management skills and enhance career development. All students are fully supported throughout by the Postgraduate Education Manager and an Education Committee.

Health & Safety
Colin Gleeson, Health and Safety Manager
The Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute is committed to pursuing high standards in the management of health and safety. As an Institute, we promote a positive health and safety culture and provide various types of health and safety training relevant to the work of our staff and students. The Health and Safety team supports and facilitates the Institute in achieving these goals.

Institute Administration
Ruth Cox, Operations Projects Lead
The Institute Administration Team plays a crucial role in supporting the Senior Management Team and Faculty, ensuring the smooth operation of the Institute. Members manage the seminar programme, organise Institute visits and other events held on site as well as contributing to managing the Institute’s social media outputs.

The Chief Operating Officer leads the Scientific Administration, Health and Safety, and Institute Administration teams.
As Establishment Licence Holder for work conducted under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act, Caroline also oversees the ASPA governance team, comprising the AWERB Chair and the Regulatory Liaison & Training Officer.

Rachel Powell
The Chief Human Resources Officer manages the HR team which covers staff welfare, recruitment, and creating and updating staff policies, which supports the smooth running of the Institute.
Mike Berne
The Chief Finance Officer manages a diverse team of finance officers who provide a range of financial services for the Institute.
Mike works closely with and supports the Senior Management Team and Institute in all elements of finance and grant management.
