Chemotherapy-induced COX-2 upregulation by cancer cells defines their inflammatory properties and limits the efficacy of chemoimmunotherapy combinations 19 April 2022
Cytotoxic therapies, besides directly provoking cancer cell death, can also stimulate immune-dependent tumour growth control or paradoxically accelerate tumour progression. Here, the authors show that all chemotherapy drugs acutely upregulate COX-2 and PGE2 production in cancer cells with pre-existing COX-2 activity and, in doing so, fuel cancer immune escape post-treatment.

Gillian Campbell Grants Advisor and Scientific Operations Officer

Gillian Campbell

Grants Advisor and Scientific Operations Officer

Gillian is the Grants Advisor and Scientific Operations Officer for the Institute. She supports Group Leaders in applying for funding throughout the whole process, from identifying grant opportunities to final submission. Gillian also works closely with the Chief Operating Officer, facilitating operational activities, such as production of the annual Scientific Report.

About Gillian Campbell

Gillian joined the CRUK Manchester Institute in 2012 as Grants Advisor in a drive to increase the number of external grants applied for and secured by our Group Leaders. She works closely with the Group Leaders and liaises with the Institute’s Grants Committee members to ensure robust reviews of all external applications take place.

Over the years, her role has developed as she increasingly provided support to the Chief Operating Officer with the publication of the annual Scientific Report and newsletters as well as editing the website and keeping the site up to date. She has also been responsible for organising the Institute’s annual Colloquium and other events held by the Institute.

To reflect this addition to her role, in 2023 Gillian was also given the job title of Scientific Operations Officer.

Why I work at CRUK MI

“I find it very satisfying that I can contribute to making a difference in the fight against cancer by supporting our scientists with their research discoveries. CRUK MI is a great place to work. I have fantastic colleagues who support each other and we work together as a team.”

Visit Grant Support Page

Applying for funding is hard work and takes time. Here at the CRUK Manchester Institute, we have a Grants Advisor who is dedicated to supporting applicants through every step of the process, with the aim of making it easier and increasing the chances of success.

The Grants Advisor can help find funding opportunities for researchers at all stages of their career, from PhD Students to Postdoctoral Fellows and Group Leaders.

“We are so pleased to have received the funding to enable us to test our hypothesis in the lab. If we can create a new medicine that can precisely target a specific type of cell within the tumour, and restore anti-cancer immune responses, this will be a game-changer for oesophageal cancer patients “

Sara Valpione

Former Institute Clinical Fellow and now Clinician in Residence within the CRUK National Biomarker Centre

“My charity bake sales – known as “David’s Great British Bake Off” – are always a hit, home baked products taste so much better than shop bought and are greatly appreciated by staff!”

David Jenkins

Purchasing Officer

“We’ve seen some remarkable responses, with an improvement for some patients within days. This is an early phase trial so there’s a lot more work to do. But the data we have so far is very encouraging and could help many thousands of people in the future”

Tim Somervaille

Senior Group Leader

“It is a pleasure to introduce my team who work to deliver our research goals. We work in a friendly and collaborative environment, supporting each other’s projects.  “
