PhD student Charlotte Russell awarded best presentation prize at the UK Cancer Metabolism Network Meeting 2024

Congratulations to Charlotte Russell for winning best presentation prize at the recent UK Cancer Metabolism Network Meeting 2024.

The meeting was hosted at the University of Birmingham and from 27 June, researchers from across the UK united for two days to connect and share ideas with colleagues in the cancer metabolism field, strengthening their network.

Amaya Viros, CRUK Advanced Clinician Scientist at the CRUK Manchester Institute – who leads the Skin Cancer and Ageing group – along with Charlotte, a PhD student in the group, were invited to attend the meeting.

Amaya and her group investigate melanoma and the microenvironment, looking at the mechanisms that impact the efficiency of melanoma metastasis. Recently, they have been studying how solid organs – such as the brain – colonised by melanoma may be affected by lipids.

Charlotte was awarded the prize for her talk on how brain lipids promote melanoma brain metastasis.

The talk focussed on the role of astrocytes lipids in promoting melanoma brain metastasis growth. I was absolutely delighted to be awarded the prize, and very surprised due to the high standard of all the participants. As my first presentation at a conference, the UK Cancer Metabolism Network were very welcoming and supportive, and I really look forward to attending in the future!

I would like to thank UK Cancer Metabolism for their kind support, prize and a fantastic meeting. Their feedback has helped us design our next experiments and we are excited to join them next year.

Well done, Charlotte!
